Laurel Wright, PhD, MPH
I'm Laurel (they/them) -- a queer, trans/non-binary psychologist who specializes in LGBTQ+ mental health. My methods are collaborative, integrative & trauma-informed.
My Approach:
Psychotherapy is an intimate pursuit of self-discovery, problem-solving & relief of suffering. My aim is to meet you where you’re at, beginning from where you are right now. Together, we’ll locate the obstacles, fears and outgrown narratives separating you from embodying your most authentic self. We'll identify meaningful therapeutic goals based on your needs and tangible steps to reach them. I'm an active therapist who provides feedback and invites yours fully.
About Me:
I hold a dual Bachelors degree in Psychology/Gender Studies and a Masters in Public Health from the University of Illinois at Chicago. After years of providing sexual health education & HIV counseling/testing with Chicago's largest LGBTQ+ health clinic, I moved to NYC to pursue a doctorate in clinical psychology at CUNY Graduate Center (City College of New York). During graduate school, I completed specialized training with gender expansive youth and families through the Ackerman Institute's Gender & Family Project. I also worked with diverse, high-risk youth and families in a therapeutic school setting with the Mount Sinai CARES Program.
After completing internship at Maimonides Health, I transitioned to a staff psychologist and started an outpatient LGBTQ+ subspecialty clinic and psychology externship training track. I was also the first psychologist to receive the Department of Psychiatry's Distinguished Teaching Award. Later on as an inpatient unit psychologist at Kings County Hospital, I worked with an interdisciplinary team to build an LGBTQ+ speciality unit for adolescents. Now in full-time private practice, I specialize in services for LGBTQIPA2S+ individuals, couples and families. I also provide supervision and consultation for individual clinicians and group practices across the country.
